The Military Personnel Services Corporation (MPSC) is seeking qualified, trained and capable individuals to serve as Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) Coordinator within the Army National Guard (ARNG) throughout Indiana. The SOS Program is designed to provide dedicated and comprehensive support to Survivors of deceased Soldiers. The position ensures the ARNG fulfills its covenant with Survivors through sustainment of a comprehensive multiagency program that improves Soldier and Family preparedness in the event of a catastrophic loss, maximizes cooperative efforts within organizations and agencies, ensures Survivors receive all the benefits to which they are entitled, and encourages Survivors to remain an integral part of the ARMY Family for as long as they desire. The SOS Program provides financial counseling referral and long term support to surviving Family members, ensuring the surviving Families’ concerns are addressed expeditiously in a holistic approach. The ARNG SOS Coordinator provides Indiana a subject matter expert supporting programs and services to Survivors of Fallen Soldiers. The SOS Coordinator will develop, administer, and coordinate SOS programs and services within the state. The ARNG SOS Coordinator assigned to the stat will be formally supervised and provided program direction by MPSC and the national contract Program Manager located at National Guard Bureau, and will also receive technical guidance from the state government point of contact. SOS Coordinator will travel to assist Families throughout portions of Indidna.

Major responsibilities include (not all inclusive):
• Serve as Subject Matter Expert on Survivor support and services, responsible for all aspects of the SOS Program
• Provide basic financial information regarding financial affairs, including but not limited to survivor benefits, budgeting, college savings plans, health care (Tricare and Medicare), long term care insurance, asset allocation, retirement savings, life insurance, and other related programs and services.
• Conduct briefings to community to increase knowledge of SOS services and support.
• Communicate with leadership, assess and analyze data from surveys and informational interactions and identify needs, refer as appropriate for assistance and develop a plan-of-action based on client needs, provide follow-up.
• Coordinate briefings, orientations, workshops and networks to enhance local and state delivery with agencies.
• Serve as an advocate for eligible beneficiaries.
• Coordinate with Casualty Assistance Center (CAC) Benefits Coordinator/Specialist and ACS Support Coordinators in service delivery to Survivors.
• Ensure all case records, follow-up/outreach, training, reports and procedures are in compliance with ACS accreditation standards.
• Coordinate and conduct support groups, life skill education and supportive counseling for Survivors using various venues. Provide information, referral, and respite care services as requested.
• Provide and/or assist with financial readiness training and assist clients in managing complex financial issues in coordination with applicable agencies to resolve issues.
• Inform and brief state leadership, and ARNG SOS Leadership on all issues impacting survivors. All issues not resolved will be immediately referred to ARNG SSFS for resolution.

Qualified candidates must have:
 Four-year degree in Business, Communications, Organizational Management or equivalent and five (5) or more years experience in related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet minimum qualifications may be substituted.
 Must have knowledge of military lifestyle.
 Knowledge, experience, and skills in the area of military personnel, finance, human resources, wellbeing, family, and deployment cycle support is preferred. Working knowledge of the structure and operation of the ARNG is preferred.
 Exceptional customer service—good oral and written communication skills.
 A valid state driver’s license; Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Database use experience.
 Work at times requires extended work hours; Ability to travel required.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY OF VETERANS AFFAIRS

Today, I would like to introduce VA for Vets, an outstanding new program to help
our Veterans find appropriate careers at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Set to launch on November 11, Veterans Day, VA for Vets takes a high-tech and
high-touch approach to recruiting, hiring, retaining, and reintegrating Veterans into the VA workforce. As part of its high-tech solution, the program offers state of the art online tools for Veterans as they seek employment or look to further career development opportunities. The online Career Center includes: a military skills translator that translates military skills into civilian language; a resume builder that tailors Veterans'resumes so they can more easily compete for open positions in VA; and avatar-based technology that connects deployed Servicemembers back to VA during their operational missions.

The high-touch solution comes in the form of career and reintegration coaches
who are readily available to help Veterans and Servicemembers take full advantage of
opportunities offered through the Career Center or to ensure a seamless transition into the VA workforce. Three new Coaching Call Centers will be operational in Dumfries, Virginia; Ebensburg, Pennsylvania; and New Orleans, Louisiana, starting October 26.

As Vice-Chair of President Obama's Veteran Employment Council, I am confident that VA can set the standard for Veterans' recruitment and career development at other Federal agencies. VA for Vets is part of a larger strategic initiative led by the newly established Veteran Employment Services Office (VESO) within the Office of Human Resources and Administration. I have set a goal for VA to increase its Veteran workforce from 30 percent to 40 percent, and VESO will be at the forefront of that effort, working with all offices and administrations, to ensure we achieve our goals.

The VA for Vets program represents a commitment to transforming the way we hire and retain our Veterans. This program requires the personal commitment of all VA employees so we can uphold our sacred trust and moral obligation to care for those "who have borne the battle."

Today, our Nation comes together to honor our veterans and commemorate the legacy of profound service and sacrifice they have upheld in pursuit of a more perfect Union. Through their steadfast defense of America's ide- als, our service members have ensured our country still stands strong, our founding principles still shine, and nations around the world know the blessings of freedom. As we offer our sincere appreciation and respect to our veterans, to their families, to those who are still in harm's way, and to those we have laid to rest, let us rededicate ourselves to serving them as well as they have served the United States of America.

Our men and women in uniform are bearers of a proud military tradition that has been dutifully passed forward - - from generation to generation -- for more than two centuries. In times of war and peace alike, our veterans have served with courage and distinction in the face of tremendous adversity, demonstrating an unfaltering commitment to America and our people. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the country they
loved. The selflessness of our service members is unmatched, and they remind us that there are few things more fundamentally American than doing our utmost to make a difference in the lives of others.

Just as our veterans stood watch on freedom's frontier, so have they safeguarded the prosperity of our Nation in our neighborhoods, our businesses, and our homes. As teachers and engineers, doctors and parents, these patri- ots have made contributions to civilian life that serve as a testament to their dedication to the welfare of our country. We owe them a debt of honor, and it is our moral obligation to ensure they receive our support for as long as they live as proud veterans of the United States Armed Forces. This year, as our troops in Iraq complete their mission, we will honor them and all who serve by working tirelessly to give them the care, the benefits, and the opportunities they have earned.

On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to our veterans, to the fallen, and to their families. To honor their contributions to our Nation, let us strive with renewed determination to keep the promises we have made to all who have an- swered our country's call. As we fulfill our obligations to them, we keep faith with the patriots who have risked their lives to preserve our Union, and with the ideals of service and sacrifice upon which our Republic was founded.
With respect for and in recognition of the contributions our service members have made to the cause of peace and freedom around the world, the Congress has provided (5 U.S.C. 6103(a)) that November 11 of each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honor our Nation's veterans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2011, as Veterans Day. I encourage all Americans to recognize the valor and sacrifice of our vet- erans through appropriate public ceremonies and private prayers. I call upon Federal, State, and local officials to display the flag of the United States and to participate in patriotic activities in their communities. I call on all Americans, including civic and fraternal organizations, places of worship, schools, and communities to support this day with commemorative expressions and programs.

In its 26th season, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir has grown to one of the largest children’s choirs in the world. Founded by Artistic Director Henry Leck, the ICC serves nearly 2,500 central Indiana children from pre- school age through high school. Financial Tip of the Week - Talking with Your Kids about Money


In some families, talking about money can be a very uncomfortable conversation. Many parents don’t know how to approach the topic of money, and some avoid it altogether. By starting the discussion early, you can make it easier to talk about this tough topic later, when your child is making larger purchases, thinking about getting a job, or beginning financial planning for college.

Every Day Steps:
Practice Smart Spending: Talk with your children about how you make spending choices based on more than
just affordability. Use language like ―We’re not going to spend our money that way because…‖ or ―It’s not a good value because…,‖ rather than just saying, ―It’s too expensive,‖ which may give the impression that you would buy it if you could afford it.

Do: Bring your kids with you to the bank. If you’re making a deposit in a savings account, talk about the impor- tance of saving ―for a rainy day.‖

Create Learning Opportunities: If you’re refinancing your mortgage, you have an opportunity discuss the con- cept of interest and the importance of paying off loan balances quickly. When you’re taking out a car loan, talk about how loans allow you to pay for things that you don’t have the money for, but you end up paying more in the long run.

Honesty as the Best Policy: If you are facing financial difficulty, be honest with your children. You don’t need to worry them with all the details, but it is helpful for them to learn that money isn’t magical — it doesn’t just ap- pear when you need it.

Stress Wants vs. Needs: Many kids — especially young ones — have difficulty differentiating between wants and needs. When your child says she ―needs‖ something, ask if she really needs it, or if she just wants it. Make sure your child understands the difference, and start paying attention to what you’re saying and the example you’re setting — for example, do you really need an expensive cup of coffee to get you through the morning?

Keep an Open Dialogue: When you’re out shopping, talk with your kids about why you make the purchases you do. Are you influenced by advertising? Pricing? The quality of the product? How do you choose one product over another? Help your child start thinking carefully about making purchases.

Highlight the Positive: Many financially savvy practices, such as buying secondhand, donating old clothes to a thrift store, and reusing and recycling goods, are also good for the environment. Point out that not only are you saving money by doing these things, but you’re also taking action to help preserve the environment.

Hoosier Youth Challenge Open Enrollment

The Hoosier Youth Challenge Acad- emy is currently accepting enrollment applications for its next class which starts 14 JAN 2012.

The average American spends more than $1,000 during the holiday season. And much of that spending is on credit cards, which means that many people face big bills in the New Year. The key to keeping holiday spending under control is budgeting. Below you'll find tips for setting and sticking with a holiday budget.

Setting a holiday budget
The first step in getting control of holiday expenses is deciding exactly how much you can spend. There are four main areas in which most people spend: gifts, entertaining, travel, and decorating. And each of these areas comes with hidden expenses. For example, gift-giving costs much more than the price of each gift. You also have to consider the cost of wrapping and shipping gifts.

Making a gift list
Take the time to make a list of everyone for whom you'd like to buy gifts. Include teachers, the mailman, co -workers, news- paper delivery people, and anyone else you usually end up giving something to. Then consider your list. Are there people who could get a card rather than a gift? Then, set a price limit on each gift. For example, you might decide that you'll set a
$30 limit on immediate family members, $20 on children in your family, and $10 on acquaintances like co-workers or teachers. Don't forget to add in the cost of wrapping paper and shipping -- including shipping costs from a catalogue or Web site to you, and from you to the recipient.

Entertainment costs
Many people forget to factor in the cost of holiday entertaining. Even if you aren't having a party, providing snacks for neighbors or friends who drop by and serving the holiday meal can be expensive. Try to think of ways in which you can cut back in this category. For example, consider inviting friends and neighbors over for a cookie swap rather than baking batches to give away. Or ask family members to contribute a dish to your holiday meal instead of supplying all the food yourself.

Travel costs
If you'll be traveling during the holidays, even if it's by car, be sure to include these costs in your budget. The tips in t he next section of this article can help you trim your travel expenses.

Decorating costs
Estimate how much you'll spend on holiday decorations. This is often an easy area to cut back in. Think about what you did last year and determine whether you can reuse any decorations. You'll find more tips below for saving money on decora- tions.

Adding it all up
Finally, add up the estimates from all four areas. If the total amount is more than you can afford, go back to your lists and
the tips in this article to see where you can cut back. Ideally you'll have done this early enough in the year so you can slo wly set aside money to cover your holiday expenses or shop for reasonably priced gifts throughout the year. But if you haven't, you can look for even more ways to trim your holiday budget while cutting back your regular expenses and putting money away for the holidays.

Once you've reached a reasonable budget limit, you need to commit to sticking to it. The tips below can help.

Ways to spend less
Many people blow their holiday budgets because they get carried away by the excitement and spirit of the season. It's im- portant to remember that you can still have a joyous holiday season without going over your budget. Try to focus on the true spirit of the season rather than the more commercial aspects. Also, try to avoid feeling pressure to give expensive gifts. The best gifts are those chosen with an eye toward what's personal and meaningful to the recipient. These kinds of gifts don't have to cost a lot.

Here are some more ways to save money during the holidays:
Set expectations with friends and family. If you're worried about your finances this holiday season, talk about it with friends and family. Let them know if you'll be cutting back on the number of gifts or how much you plan to spend.
This is especially important for children, who often have unrealistic expectations about gifts and don't fully understand the cost factors. Also consider price-limited charitable donations in the family's name.
Look for ways to cut back on the number of gifts you buy. There are many ways to shorten your gift list. If you have a large family or group of friends, ask if they'd like to draw names out of a hat and give one gift per person. Or give family gifts, such as a board game, a "movie night" with gift certificates to a video rental store and snacks, or a pass to
a local museum rather than individual gifts.
Consider homemade gifts. There are many heartfelt, thoughtful gifts that don't come with a sales receipt. You could cook some treats; put together a photo album; make a themed gift basket full of smaller items, like tea, paperback books, or gardening tools; or give the gift of your time by making homemade coupons or certificates.
Make a shopping plan. Don't head out to the mall without a specific list of gift ideas. This is how you end up spending more than you budgeted for. Look through catalogues or on Internet sites for ideas and develop a list before you even step foot in a store.
Look for bargains. Take the time to look for ways to save money on gifts. Try to buy several things from one catalogue or Internet site to save money on shipping, or better yet, look for sites that offer free shipping. Comparison shop using the fl i- ers that come in the weekend papers to find the best deal around or use sites like Google Product Search at www.google.com/prdhp or PriceGrabber at www.pricegrabber.com. Consider buying gifts on sites like eBay at www.ebay.com or at Overstock.com at www.overstock.com, both of which offer many new, high-quality items at discount prices.

Be sure to use your Exchange. In addition to the usual tax savings and price-matching benefit, you'll find special holiday discounts.
Cut back on mailing expenses. If you always send boxes of gifts or holiday cards to loved ones far away, think of ways to save on or eliminate shipping costs this year. Buy magazine subscriptions or send online gift certificates instead of shipping gifts. Send holiday postcards or even e-cards instead of regular cards. If you've already bought cards, cross some names off your list and save the leftovers for next year. And be sure to mail things early so you don't have to pay extra for fast shipping.
Make careful travel plans. If your holiday plans include a trip, be sure to investigate all of your options as early as possible.
For example, could you drive instead of fly? Stay with a friend or relative instead of in a hotel room? Make do without a rental car? If you need to travel by air, be sure to spend time looking for the lowest price ticket. If possible, be flexi- ble about dates. You could save a lot of money by flying immediately after the holidays rather than before.
Keep it simple. Focus on enjoying the simple pleasures of the holiday season, like spending time with friends and family or taking a walk to see the holiday decorations in your neighborhood. These kinds of activities often capture the spirit of the season better than expensive gifts or elaborate celebrations.
Use your credit card wisely. Finally, be very careful about using your credit card to pay for holiday expenses. Don't use your card unless you know you can pay if off right away. If possible use a card that you're not already carrying a bal- ance and making payments on. Remember, buying a sweater on sale with a credit card and making monthly payments could change the sale price to double the price. You don't want to start the New Year off with an oversized credit card bill.

The winter holidays can be stressful for anyone, but when your loved one is deployed, they can be especially difficult. You may experience a range of emotions, from worry to loneliness -- even anger and disappointment. The holidays may magnify those feelings, but they can also be a time to strengthen your emotional commitment to your service member and your fam- ily.

Plan ahead for the holidays
If possible, sit down with your deployed service member before your separation to talk about how you will mark the holi- days. If you are already apart, discuss your plans through letters, e-mail, or telephone calls.
Get an early start with gifts and cards. Depending on where your loved one is stationed, it can take a week or more for a package to arrive from the U.S. Give yourself plenty of time to make or purchase and send your gift so your service member will receive it in time for the holiday. If you have children, ask them to write their gift lists early to avoid last - minute purchases that may put you over your budget.
Record a holiday message. Borrow a video camera or tape recorder if you don't have one, and record yourself and other family members wishing the service member a happy holiday season. Do this far enough in advance so your loved one receives it in time for the holiday. Include a "Do not open until . . ." note on the package asking your service member
to wait until the day of the holiday to view or listen to the recording.
Take lots of pictures. Take pictures of you and your family decorating for the holidays, celebrating, and on the holiday itself, opening gifts. Send these to your service member so he or she will feel included in the festivities.
Be flexible with phone calls. Calls home are unpredictable, so it's best not to count on a phone call from your service mem- ber on the holiday itself. You might want to aim for a call during the week of the holiday instead.

Surround yourself with people
Look for opportunities to be with family and friends. Get together with others who are in your situation. Being with others who are going through the same thing helps prevent loneliness.
Plan to attend holiday events for families of deployed service members. You can find out about these by checking with your installation's family support center.
If you have school-age children, attend holiday school events. Volunteer to help your children's teachers. Even if you aren't able to attend the event, you can bake or help make decorations.
Help organize a holiday party or potluck for families in your loved one's command. This will help keep your mind off your loneliness and you will be comforted to be with others who are going through the same thing.
Visit friends or family on the holiday. If you live far away and funds are tight, ask those who would normally give you a
gift to chip in for an airline ticket instead. If you prefer to stay home, invite family or friends to spend the holiday with you.
Volunteer for a good cause. Collect coats for the needy; help stock shelves at the food pantry; serve a meal at a homeless shelter. Helping others less fortunate than you will keep you busy and will remind you of all you have. Ask your fam- ily support center staff about volunteer opportunities in your area.

Reduce holiday stress
It's easy to get caught up in all you have to do during this time of year, especially if you have always shared the work with your deployed service member. Tell yourself you don't have to do everything. It's more important to take time out to enjoy the season.
Find ways to have fun. Drive or walk with your family or friends to see the holiday decorations. Give yourself time for activities that make you feel good. Go swimming, sledding, ice skating, or skiing. Go on a nature walk or start a new project.
Get plenty of rest and exercise. Remember to take care of yourself and keep your energy level high by eating well, staying active, and getting enough sleep.
Prioritize. Make a list of all the things you need to do and decide which ones are the most important. Do those first. Then i f you have time, start on the others. You may not have time for everything on the list, but if you get the important things out of the way, the rest probably won't matter.
Ask for help. Many people in your life will want to help you during this time, but may not know what you need. Let people know exactly how they can support you. If hanging your holiday lights seems more than you can manage, ask a neighbor for a hand. If you have small children and need time alone to shop for gifts or just decompress, a friend may be glad to babysit. The support of friends, family, and others will not only lighten your load, but will help you feel less alone.

Be realistic about what to expect
As the family member of a deployed service member, it's important to be flexible, especially during the holidays. Here are some ways to do that:
Accept that this holiday season will be different. It's easy to fall into the trap of expecting everything to be perfect, especially around the holidays.
Do something you wouldn't ordinarily do. Instead of celebrating the holiday the way you have in years past, make an effort to keep busy in a memorable way. If you have always stayed home on the holiday, this year go to the movies, spend time with friends or relatives, or visit a museum that's open on the holiday.
Keep holiday decorations up until your loved one returns, if it makes you feel better. Or take them down and put them back up when your loved one returns. Some families celebrate the holidays twice: once on the actual dates, and again
when their deployed service member returns home. However, be aware that leaving decorations up long after the holiday has passed may be an unpleasant reminder of your separation and may make it more difficult to accept your situation.
Prepare yourself for a post-holiday letdown. Getting through the holidays may not be as difficult as you thought, especially if you keep busy and surround yourself with loved ones. Once it's over and things go back to normal, you may find it difficult to get on with day-to-day life. Prepare yourself for this possibility by keeping your support system in place in January and beyond.

CHICAGO (AP) — Orlando Ocasio has a Purple Heart. What he needs now is a job.

As a member of the Marine Corps, Ocasio stormed Baghdad in 2003. A year later on his second deployment, he and his team were ambushed on their way to Fallujah, and he was shot in the leg and suffered shrapnel wounds. When he came home in 2004, he got a job at a factory making airline parts, earning about $42,000 a year. He bought a home in the suburbs and settled down with his wife, Monica, to raise their two young boys.
"Then the economy went down and I was laid off, and as soon as that happened we couldn't pay our mortgage, put food on the table," said Ocasio, 31, who has now been unemployed for two years and has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder since the ambush.
"We were about 90 days from being homeless."
Ocasio joined the ranks of the 240,000 unemployed veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Unemployment tops 20 percent among 18-to-24-year-old veterans, compared with a national rate of about 9 percent, Department of Labor figures show. And the situation is expected to worsen after 10,000 service members return from Afghanistan and 46,000 come home from Iraq by year's end — many wounded or suffering from mental trauma.
A measure approved by the Senate on Thursday is aimed at helping unemployed veterans, by providing special tax incentives to companies that hire them and strengthening employment counseling and training programs. The House is expected to approve the bill next week, which would send it to President Barack Obama.
At the Humboldt Park Armory in Chicago, the chatter among men and women who have served was about the economy and the troops that are coming home to yet another battle, the job market.
"I am very concerned for all these troops," said Leroy Holland who spent most of his time on the John F. Kennedy battleship during the Vietnam conflict. "They will go through the turmoil of not feeling like they fit in, the hell of adjusting back to life and in an economy that is ruined. I feel bad for them."
While veterans from that era may see fewer benefits from the tax incentives and credits in the legislation, they have plenty of advice for veterans who are coming home to tough times.
"Please, please don't be shamed to ask for help, especially mental help," said 66-year-old Army veteran James Poriatis, who was injured in the Vietnam war. "We were all mostly ashamed after Vietnam, you don't have to be."
Ocasio, who suffers from anxiety and sleep problems, has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Since the ambush in 2004 he has felt distorted.
"Emotionally, physically I just have not been able to recover and here I am, at the VA, seven years later," he said while sitting in a small waiting room on the tenth floor of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.
With the help of a friend and government assistance in the form of disability pay, Ocasio is now living in an apartment in Chicago with his wife and two toddler sons. Monica, also a former Marine, is a full-time student and mother while Ocasio tries to recover fully from the war and looks for a job.
"We have friends who are on their third and fourth deployments, and they have children, but they don't want to get out of the military because they are afraid to come home and not have a job and medical insurance," Ocasio said. "There are a lot of scared soldiers."

Senate Passes Jobs Bill for Veterans

America’s one million unemployed veterans will soon get a much-needed boost in the job market with expanded education, training and transition assistance, thanks to an American Legion-backed bill passed by the Senate on Nov. 10. The VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 also provides tax credits to businesses that hire veterans who are out of work — $5,600 for each veteran and $9,600 for each disabled veteran.
“This legislation will go a long way in helping our veterans get decent jobs,” said Fang A. Wong, national commander of The American Legion. “It falls in line with initiatives we supported in my testimony before Congress last September – a mandatory transition assistance program, job training for older veterans, and private-sector recognition of military skills and training.”
Wong said that Congress has honored America’s veterans in a way “that really makes a difference” by passing such important legislation the day before Veterans Day. “We applaud the leadership of Senator Murray and Representative Miller in creating a piece of legislation that addresses some of the factors that are stopping our veterans from getting jobs.”
When troops come home from Iraq and Afghanistan, Wong said, “The last thing they need is to file for unemployment benefits. They’ve been working hard as medics, truck drivers, mechanics, and a variety of other jobs with civilian counterparts.
“The government and private sector need to step up and give them work opportunities they deserve. This is what the Legion has been fighting for, and Congress has delivered an impressive set of tools that our veterans can use to earn a living.”
The VOW to Hire Heroes Act, once signed into law, will boost employment opportunities for veterans. Key provisions include:
•Tax credit of up to $5,600 for hiring veterans who have been looking for a job for more than six months, as well as a $2,400 credit for veterans who are unemployed for more than four weeks, but less than six months.
• Tax credit of up to $9,600 for hiring veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been looking for a job for more than six months.
• Makes the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) — an interagency workshop coordinated by the departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs — mandatory for servicemembers moving on to civilian life to help them secure meaningful jobs through resume-writing workshops and career counseling.
• Expands education and training opportunities for older veterans by providing 100,000 unemployed veterans of past eras and wars with up to one year of additional Montgomery GI Bill benefits for education or training programs at community colleges and technical schools.
• Provides disabled veterans up to one year of additional vocational rehabilitation and employment benefits.
• Allows servicemembers to start looking for federal jobs before separating from active duty in order to facilitate a truly seamless transition from the military to jobs at federal agencies.
“For too long, at the end of their career we patted our veterans on the back for their service and then pushed them out into the job market alone,” said Murray. “The VOW to Hire Heroes Act will give our veterans the job skills to get their foot in the door and incentivize employers to make sure that door is open to them.”
According to Tim Tetz, the Legion’s legislative director, provisions of the bill “are fully paid for with funding from VA Home Loan programs and other savings within the department.”
The unemployment rate for about a quarter-million veterans who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan stands at 12.1 percent. Of the estimated one million jobless veterans in America, two-thirds of them fall within the 35-64 age group.
“About one in 12 veterans can’t find a job in this country. And yet, the Department of Labor tells us there are more than three million job openings right now,” Wong said. “They say employers are having trouble finding workers with enough skills and training.
“Do we have to draw them a picture? They should all be hiring well-trained, disciplined individuals who work well with a team and accomplish the goals they’re given — in other words, they should be hiring veterans.”

Our Sheet Products division has an immediate opening for a Shift Manager to handle various aspects of maintenance. Principal products include sheet products that are organized into distinct sections for Hot Rolled, Cold Rolled, and Coated Sheet products.


Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
-Administration of the safety program to ensure a safe work environment, including proper housekeeping, communications to direct reports, enforcement of rules and policies, investigating and installation of safety improvements.
-Application of engineering principles and problem solving techniques to evaluate and operating issues to maximize efficiencies, analyze delay failures to prevent reoccurrences, improve overall performance of equipment as it relates to safety, environmental, quality and productivity issues.
-Use technical knowledge, equipment documentation, safety procedures and maintenance schedules to follow, improve and develop preventative and routine maintenance programs.
-Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance with mechanical/electrical maintenance staff for both downturns and major outages.
-Directly supervise union mechanical and electrical maintenance staff, and work closely with vendors and contractors as necessary.
-Ensure environmental compliance. Other administrative activities may include scheduling/paying crews, completing maintenance reports, and other reporting as necessary.

Requirements
-Minimum 2 years working in an industrial maintenance atmosphere.
-Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology discipline or equivalent years of demonstrated knowledge of electrical maintenance in a heavy industrial environment.
-Experience in heavy manufacturing with an overall knowledge of electrical maintenance
-Strong background in the maintenance and repair of operating equipment.
-Knowledge of control circuitry, print reading and motors

The 2020 Company, LLC (2020) is seeking qualified, trained and capable individuals to serve as Family Readiness Support Assistants for BCT/BDE Commands within the Army National Guard throughout the States and Territories. Family Readiness is a Commander’s responsibility. The ARNG FRSA position is designed to provide the Commander with a family readiness program assistant to coordinate all aspects of the Command’s Family Readiness Program. FRSAs assigned to the Commands will be formally supervised by the contract company, but will receive technical guidance and direction from the Commander or their representative, while working closely with the State Family Program Office.
Major responsibilities include (not all inclusive):
 Serve as Family Readiness Support Assistant for the Commander
 Provide assistance in development and implementation of Command’s Family Readiness Program

Veterans Opportunity to Work Act of 2011


Veterans' Job Training Bill Passes in House

The House of Representatives passed legislation Wednesday to provide occupational training to out-of-work veterans as a way to counter growing unemployment in their ranks. The measure passed, 418-6, under suspension of the rules, an expedited procedure requiring a two-thirds majority for passage.

The legislation, HR 2433, the Veterans Opportunity to Work Act of 2011, would allow 100,000 unemployed veterans ages 35 through 64 to apply for Montgomery GI Bill (PL 78-346) benefits. Eligible veterans could choose to enhance their skills with up to a year of training for high-demand fields such as information technology and health care. The bill, sponsored by Florida Republican Jeff Miller, Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, would require participating veterans to submit a monthly certification of enrollment in a specific course. The assistance each month would be equal to the basic educational benefits provided under the Montgomery GI Bill - a maximum of $1,426 a month for 2011. Payments would be made from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Department's readjustment benefits account.

We all know about the challenges facing veterans looking for jobs: an unemployment higher than the national average, and that's not even taking into account the challenges faced by wounded veterans who are in the civilian job market. One of the initiatives that aims to help wounded vets is the Network of Champions, a project formed in 2008 by defense contractor Northrop Grumman to help wounded soldiers return to civilian life.

MINNEAPOLIS- Walmart U.S. President and CEO Bill Simon, who spent 25 years in the U.S. Navy, says he will never forget what the “salty old sea captain” of his first destroyer told him when he reported for duty at the age of 22. “He sat me down. He looked me in the eye. He said, ‘I want you to know I trust you, that your country is counting on you, and that while we might make mistakes, we’re all in this together.’ Then he said, ‘Get out there and do your job.’”

Simon called those words “one of the most enduring gifts I got from my service. The confidence we gained in ourselves, the ability to do things we never thought imaginable, and what we can do together, is what America needs today. It’s what we need to bottle and deliver to our country.”

Now responsible for more than 3,700 Walmart stores and 1.3 million employees across the United States, Simon urged thousands of veterans gathered Wednesday for the 93rd National Convention of The American Legion in Minneapolis to help lead an “American Renewal” that can spring from the talents and capabilities of the newest generation of veterans.“We love to hire veterans,” he said. “Veterans not only have a record of performance under pressure, but they are educated and technologically savvy, quick learners, and team players.”

Simon said the corporation is using a dedicated website – www.careerswithamission.com – to attract veteran applicants and hire them. Among its features, the site provides searchable job listings as well as guidance about how to convert military experience into fulfilling careers. He added that whenever the spouse of servicemember has to leave a Walmart job due to a military transfer, the spouse is offered another Walmart job in the new location.

“Today, after 10 years of war, there’s a new group of American men and women coming home, ready to lead us in the next American renewal,” Simon told the
Legionnaires. “I’ve got to tell you about this generation. They are incredible. When I signed up to serve, we knew combat was a possibility. For this generation, it’s a probability. Two, three, four deployments, and still they answer the call of duty. They are why I am confident everything is going to be OK.”

He said it is up to the nation at home “to create conditions for their success, so that when they come home, they can lead us to a better day. With respect to jobs, now is not a time to retreat or wait. Now is the time to tackle our problems head-on. “I am proud of the jobs we have at Walmart,” he added. “Inside our stores every day, the American dream comes to life. Last year, we promoted more than 140,000 hourly associates, which is like giving all of Dayton, Ohio, a promotion.
“We’re not waiting on government, businesses, or anyone else,” Simon said. “Frankly, if your business plan involves waiting for somebody else, I wish you all the best.”
There are some things the government could do to “put the wind at our backs,” Simon explained. “First and foremost, we can start by taking care of our veterans when they come home. It’s our moral obligation, yes, but they have so much to offer our country. Vendors welcome, have space inside building (has sides open but very clean and very suitable, has electric, room for 30 vendors) also have space outside building for vendors.

Corn hole Tournament: 30 dollars per team, each team bring a half of board and their beanbags, 60 percent payback, registration is on our web site.
