Purpose of Position/Summary:
The mission of the Hoosier Youth ChalleNGe Academy (HYCA) is to intervene in and reclaim the lives of at-risk youth to produce program graduates with the values, skills, education and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults. This program provides military based training, including supervised work experience in community service and conservation programs, to civilian youth who cease to attend secondary school before graduating so as to improve their life skills and employment potential.
This position is responsible for recruitment of applicants for admission to the Hoosier Youth ChalleNGe Academy; the recruitment and assignment of mentors; and, coordinating placement of Cadets upon graduation in the post residential phase.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Formulates, organizes and executes Regional Recruitment Program for Cadets and Cadet Mentors;
• Assist in Development of the recruitment and marketing plan, program brochures, presentations/media, and other materials;
• Implements the recruitment plan and markets the program brochures, presentations/media, and other materials;
• Prepares and presents presentations to, acts as the HYCA liaison with, and networks with school districts, community organizations, juvenile justices, civic groups, employers, etc.;
• Conducts applicant assessments through testing, background information and personal interviews; Conducts follow-up interviews with applicants, families and others as needed;
• Performs case management functions, including referrals for assistance, for applicants and applicants’ immediate families as needed;
• Makes recommendations to the R/P/M Coordinator and Director of final acceptance or denial of applicant requests for admission to an Academy ChalleNGe Program class;
• Prepares accepted students for admission to HYCA ChalleNGe Program classes at the Academy;
• Ensures appropriate student data is entered into the Data Management and Reporting System (DMARS):
• Provides student applicant contact and case management reports to the HYCA main campus weekly.
• Recruits, formally screens, trains and matches volunteer adult mentors with their Mentees midway through the residential phase so as to begin the communication about the Cadet’s future plans;
• Assists in the Cadet’s development of their Post-Residential Action Plan (P-RAP) providing copies to the Mentors encouraging them to utilize the document as they interact with Cadets during the Post-Residential Phase;
• Monitors the Cadet/Mentor relationships in residential and post residential phases;
• Implements a placement program for Cadets upon graduation for employment and/or further academic enrollment;
• Performs all necessary administrative functions, including, but not limited to: filing, storage and transport of records, opening and responding to mail, providing information and forms to applicants and the general community.
Job Requirements:
• Broad knowledge of the Youth ChalleNGe Program and all applicable regulations, policies and procedures;
• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, tactfully and persuasively, with diverse individuals and groups;
• Ability to speak before professional and lay groups as well as economically and educationally disadvantaged groups regarding the Hoosier Youth ChalleNGe Academy;
• Ability to work with emotional at-risk teenagers and unstable families, and to conduct probing personal interviews;
• Working knowledge of computers and the use of basic software programs such as Microsoft Office;
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with school counselors and staffs, social service organizations, local juvenile justices, employment agencies, local employers, civic organizations, etc.;
• Ability to organize and work independently on multiple tasks under pressure;
• Must have a valid Indiana Driver’s License.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
Incumbent reports to the R/P/M Coordinator and supervises the Case Manager, Regionally placed.

Team Leaders are assigned to a Team of Cadets, whom they work with the majority of their shifts. The Team Leader is the direct supervisor of the Cadets and is primarily responsible for Cadet accountability, discipline and safety; enforcement of Academy rules and policies; instruction of drill and ceremony; physical‐fitness training; movement of Cadets according to the training schedule; completing administrative reports; and, providing assistance in tutoring of academics.
Acting as a positive role model Team Leaders also play an important role in ensuring cadet completion of the 8‐core objectives, (Academic Excellence, Physical Fitness, Job Skills, Leadership/Followership, Responsible Citizenship, Service to Community, Health & Hygiene, and Life Coping Skills). Teaching the Cadets life‐skills through: positive mentoring; leading by example; providing counseling; teaching basic social skills; enforcing standards; helping to build self‐confidence and problem solving abilities; developing leadership and teamwork skills; and, providing instruction/facilitation of Challenge tasks.
