Careers at Home Depot

The Home Depot recognizes and salutes the military spouse. Adaptable, talented, highly motivated, creative, and reliable - these are just a few of the unique qualities associated with military spouses. Home Depot wants to help military families reach their full potential and realize their career goals by linking military spouses with meaningful and rewarding employment opportunities. You can do it. They can help.

COMPANY QUICK STATS

Company name: The Home Depot

Headquarters location: Atlanta, Ga.

Number of employees: 355,000

2005 annual revenue: $81.5 billion

Number of U.S. facilities: 1,868 The Home Depot stores within the United States

RECRUITER INTEL Q/A
1. What do military-spouse hires bring to your company that you like? Military spouses come from a multitude of diverse backgrounds and offer a wealth of different perspectives. Experience from previous jobs, vast industries that are not limited to regional locations, and the cultural insights gained from living in many domestic and international locations are just a few of the valuable qualities military spouses can bring to The Home Depot.

2. What advantages do military spouses have over their peers of the same age and education level? As mentioned before, military spouses bring a multitude of perspectives due to the nature of their situation. Also, many recruiters and HR managers find military spouses have a good understanding of the job-search process and are willing to be flexible regarding hours, full-time/part-time status, salary or the type of work available.

3. What are the most common mistakes you see on military-spouse résumés? The most common mistake is certainly not taking the time to complete the “job history” and “duties” sections on an application. Because The Home Depot requires the completion of an online application, many either do not see the need to be as thorough as with a paper résumé, as accurate, or do not find the space to be as adequate as they would like to list their previous duties. Applicants should exercise attention to detail and fill out as much as possible, as accurately as they can.

4. Do you look for any specific educational requirements for this position? Managerial positions often require a high-school diploma or GED. The specific educational requirements for each position can be found on our Web site at http://www.careers.homedepot.com/.

5. List three short tips or words of advice for military spouses. Any and all retail experience should be included, particularly if it was gained in a related industry. Previous supervisory positions or training is always important to focus on. Demonstrated ability to provide great customer service while multitasking is also a key skill.

Guard Spouses Get Career Training Relief

Guard Spouses Get Career Training Relief

Laguna Hills, Calif. - Feb. 21, 2008 - Allied Schools is now offering no-charge career training for the spouses of Army National Guard Soldiers (ARNG) on active drilling status. This military spouse education program - designed exclusively by Allied Schools - comes in the wake of efforts by the Department of Defense and various service branches to broaden the career and educational opportunities of military spouses.

Guard spouses study at no charge when Guard Soldiers enroll at Allied Schools using their Tuition Assistance benefits. ARNG spouses can choose from an approved list of courses in real estate, the medical field and business - many of which are 100% online. Allied offers training to be a medical transcriptionist and real estate broker, for example, which are highly mobile professions well-suited to the military lifestyle.

Distance (online) education allows Guard spouses to train from home while still maintaining their daily commitments to family and friends. Military spouses don't have to worry about in-state/out-of-state tuition rates if they must move to another state - online training <http://www.education4military.com/advantage-tuition-military-spouse.asp> removes the barrier of residency status.

The school hopes that no-charge vocational training for Guard spouses will build on recent efforts by both private and governmental institutions to help combat the career and educational challenges that face all military spouses, including those men and women married to Army National Guard Soldiers.

A 2004 Rand Corp Study noted that two-thirds of military spouses "felt that being a military spouse had negatively affected their work opportunities." It is hoped that education grants, tuition assistance, no-charge training and other educational initiatives will help Guard spouses achieve their school and career goals.

In addition to National Guard Soldiers on active-drilling status, the military spouses of active-duty Airmen, Sailors, Marines and Army are eligible for the program. Allied's no-charge career training for military spouses is an in-house program that is not affiliated with any US government spouse education programs.

This article was contributed by Allied Schools, which is a Distance Education & Training Council (DETC) accredited school offering 100% online courses in real estate, the medical field and business. To learn more about no-charge career training for military spouses, visit http://www.education4military.com/ or call (888) 501-5221 to speak with a military admissions representative.

About Allied Schools
Allied Schools, Inc., established in 1992, is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally-recognized accrediting agency. Allied Schools has provided quality instruction to more than 825,000 students in the last 15 years. Students can choose from 25+ career training courses in the areas of real estate, medical and business or enroll in a high school diploma program. Online and traditional home study courses offer students a quick and convenient way to learn. Allied Schools is based in Laguna Hills, Calif.

Army Career Alumni Program Express

ACAP 'Express' to Debut This Month (FEBRUARY 2008)

Army News Service Kayla Overton February 15, 2008 WASHINGTON - The launch of the Army Career Alumni Program Express, Feb. 28, will give Soldiers, their Families and Civilians a jump start on new careers as they retire or separate from the Army.

For example, the new online program will allow Soldiers, who are on deployment or living in remote locations, to begin planning for their future careers earlier than normal. Before ACAP Express, Soldiers had to come to an ACAP Center to receive services they will now be able to obtain online.

The new program will be as simple to use as scheduling an airline reservation online, according to James Hoffman, ACAP director.

Any Soldier on active duty, having at least 180 days of continuous active service, and separating within one year or retiring within two years, is eligible for the services.

Once approved and enrolled in the program, the planning begins. ACAP Express will allow a person to schedule attendance at events, access job assistance training tutorials, access an automated resume and cover-letter writer, and access ACAP counselors. Tutorials on job-search topics will also be available.

"Around 63,000 Soldiers come through the ACAP program annually," Hoffman said. "Soldiers are interested; they want to be successful, and our program will help them do that."
ACAP meets congressional mandates by offering pre-separation counseling and employment-assistance training.

ACAP Express allows Soldiers the ability to register and schedule services, but Hoffman reminded that ACAP centers at installations are still available. Soldiers deployed in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan can also receive support from ACAP Centers via phone and e-mail, Hoffman said.

Family members and Army Civilians are also encouraged to use ACAP Express. Once a Soldier retires or separates from the military, spouses sometimes find they have put their own careers on hold, and this is their opportunity to gain knowledge on how to enter the workforce, Hoffman said.

The ACAP Express program will undergo a 12-month pilot test to determine how to best meet the expectations of Soldiers, Hoffman said. He explained that users will critique the program and feedback will be reviewed in order to make the system even better and more functional.

PROGRAMS TO HELP GET A JOB

GI Bill Apprenticeship and OJT Program

The following will guide you on the use of the GI Bill On-the-Job Training and Apprenticeship Program and explain the new FY 2008 payment rates - effective 1 October 2007.

If you are a veteran or currently in the guard or reserve, the On-The-Job Training (OJT) Program offers you an alternative way to use your VA (GI Bill) education and training benefits.

The following is a summary of these GI Bill alternatives.

When you are trained for a new job, you can receive monthly training benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in addition to your regular salary. This means that you can receive up to $935.85 a month ($262.65 for Reserve/Guard) tax-free, on top of your regular salary! That's over $14,000 in cash benefits over two years, for training in an OJT or apprenticeship training program.

VA pays veteran GI Bill participants on a scale depending on the amount of time they are enrolled in the program. For example from October 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007 the program pays $935.85 a month for the first six months of training, $715.65 for the second six months of training and $495.45 for remaining training.

Important OJT Payment Rate News: Due to the expiration of the law that increased the OJT payment to 85 percent of the GI Bill payment rate in 2005, the OJT payment rate will drop to 75 percent on January 1, 2008. This will mean that the current OJT (Veteran) payment rates will drop to $825.75, $605.55, and $385.35 in 2008.

VA pays GI Bill Selected Reserve participants on a similar scale but at the following reduced rates; $269.45 a month for the first six months of training, $206.05 for the second six months of training and $142.65 for remaining training. Selected Reserve participants will also see these rates drop in 2008.

Qualifying Jobs

  • To qualify, your job must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be supervised at least 50 percent of the time.

  • Job training must lead to an entry-level position. (Management training programs do not qualify.)

  • You must be a full-time paid employee — not on commission.

  • Your training must be documented and reported.

  • You cannot have previous experience job experience in that field.

  • You must be recently hired (within one to two years).

  • The job must require at least six months training to become fully trained.

  • The employer may be private, local or state government.

  • Companies Who Participate in the Apprenticeship Program

Here is a list of well-known companies who participate in the VA's Apprenticeship Program:
*Pirelli Tire Co.
*Proctor & Gable Co.
*Merck Pharmaceuticals
*Cessna Aircraft
*Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.
*Lockheed Martin Corp.
*Bell South
*World Toyota
*Comcast
*Pratt and Whitney Engine Co.
*Law enforcement (police, sheriff, State Patrol)
*Dept. of Corrections (prisons, detention centers)
*Local Fire Departments

Eligibility

You may be eligible if you are eligible for the GI Bill either under the Active Duty (Veteran) or Reserve GI Bill programs and:

You are no longer on active duty

You were recently hired or promoted

You left active duty less than 10 years ago or you are currently a member of the Guard or Reserve (Reserve GI Bill)

So, if you are qualified for the GI Bill and you have started a new job or apprenticeship program, you should apply for this little known GI Bill benefit. In some cases, the VA will even pay retroactively for OJT from the past 12 months.

Note: You may not receive GI Bill OJT benefits at the same time you receive the GI Bill education benefits.

Take the Next Step
Your next step should be to contact your nearest VA Regional Office or local State Approving Agency (SAA). Your SAA will help you get started on the process and answer any questions you may have. SEE BELOW.
