Position Title: ARNG BCT/BDE Family Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA)

The Military Personnel Services Corporation (MPSC) is seeking qualified,
trained and capable individual to serve as Family Readiness Support Assistant
for Commands within the Army National Guard throughout the States and
Territories. Family Readiness is a Commander’s responsibility. The ARNG FRSA
position is designed to provide the Commander with a Family readiness program
assistant to coordinate all aspects of the Command’s Family Readiness Program.
FRSAs assigned to the Commands will be formally supervised by the contract
company, but will receive technical guidance and direction from the Commander
or their representative.

Technology ‘boot camp’ Looking for Veterans
TechStars, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping veteran
entrepreneurs raise capital and start successful businesses, is hosting a
Patriot Boot Camp for veterans and spouses who are interested in starting
technology companies. The boot camp is a three-day program, held at Georgetown
University from July 17-19, that will teach attendees the ins and outs of
creating a technology startup.
“Veterans are by definition great entrepreneurs,” said Taylor McLemore,
director of Patriot Boot Camp. “They are natural problem solvers, adapt quickly
to needs, and have an incredible level of tenacity. We will be very well served
if veterans lead the businesses of our future.”
The three-day, intensive camp is free to veterans and spouses and offers
one-on-one mentoring from industry leaders and fellow entrepreneurs, business
presentations with practical advice on building a technology startup, and rich
networking opportunities.
“Patriot Boot Camp is an absolute must for any veteran or spouse who has an
idea for a technology business,” said Army veteran Mary Hagy, a Legionnaire and
founder and CEO of cWyze, Inc. Hagy was also a judge of the Legion’s 2013
National Oratorical Contest and a current member of the Legion’s Business Task
Force.
Throughout the three-day event, attendees will be guided through an entrepreneurial
plan, which includes finding a business idea, developing a fundraising pitch,
improving accelerator application, refining the product concept and
demonstrating progress toward entrepreneurial success. Each participant can
then share his or her progress with the Patriot Boot Camp cohort.

VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) Summer Program is a highly
professional and rigorous volunteer service program through which national
service members serve as full time volunteers in organizations for ten weeks
year. VISTA projects focus on building permanent capacity and infrastructure in
nonprofit and other organizations to help more effectively bring individuals
and communities out of poverty. VISTA Summer Associates will serve from June 1,
2013 to August 8, 2013.
MCCOY is seeking high energy individuals who are passionate about helping
children learn during the summer months by serving as Summer Learning Coaches
in community based summer youth programs. As an Americorps VISTA summer
associate, you will work under the supervision and guidance of agency staff to
provide fun learning activities, especially in reading and math, that will both
prevent summer learning loss and promote academic growth. In addition, you will
have the chance to have fun, mentor young people, and have a summer experience
you won’t soon forget. This is a 10 week commitment from June 3---August 9.
Summer VISTAs receive a stipend of $2115 for the 10 week commitment as well as
a choice of a $250 cash award or a $1200 education award at the successful
conclusion of their term. Training and orientation is provided. To apply, go to

AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Opportunity
VISTA will assist with the statewide expansion of the Joining Community Forces
Initiative that focuses on improving military employment, youth development,
Wounded Warrior Support, and financial readiness strategies. The VISTA will
work independently, assist with project management, develop and network with
community partners, and have the opportunity to collaborate with other team
members of Family Programs. The Indiana Guard maintains 13 state wide Family
Assistance Centers which serve nearly 500,000 military members, families,
veterans and retirees. The VISTA’s effort will help to enhance the quality of

Indiana to License Military-trained Medics

Another victory has been registered in The American Legion’s ongoing
licensing and credentialing campaign. On April 2, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence
signed into law a bill that "provides that the Emergency Medical Services
Commission issue a license or certificate to a military service applicant who
meets the necessary requirements." The new law, which takes effect on July
1, spells out those requirements as completing a military training program in
emergency medicine, working in the related military occupational specialty, and
performing those duties at a level that is "substantially equivalent"
to that of a civilian licensee, such as an emergency medical technician or
paramedic. In practical terms, a military medic or corpsman’s skills and
experience will now be recognized by their civilian counterparts in Indiana.
The bill, which unanimously passed in the Indiana General Assembly, also
allows for the issuance of a temporary certificate or provisional license
"while the military service applicant is satisfying requirements as
determined by the (Emergency Medical Services) commission."
"Helping Hoosier veterans put their military training and experience to
work when they return is good for them and good for the state," Pence
said. "(This) is good Hoosier common sense that honors the brave men and
women who served our nation and sacrificed to protect our freedom."
The American Legion Department of Indiana played a significant role in the
passage of its new state law by working with the Department of Defense on
codifying it and lobbying both houses of the state legislature on the bill’s
behalf. On the day after the bill was signed, Department Commander Richard
Jewell, a Vietnam War combat veteran, recalled his testimony before members of
the General Assembly and how he viewed the skills of the military’s emergency
medical practitioners. "I spoke off the cuff, but told them basically that
I had personally seen these folks in action in Vietnam (practicing emergency
medicine) under the most horrific conditions imaginable ," Jewell said.
"If I was in any kind of medical emergency or accident, there’s nobody I
would rather come to my side than a combat medic or corpsman."
In an effort spearheaded by its National Economic Commission, Legion
departments are campaigning on behalf of legislation that would require their
state’s agencies and bodies to recognize appropriate military training and
experience as fulfilling all or at least part of their licensing and
credentialing requirements. The Legion also favors the logical state-to-state
transfer of licenses and certifications previously issued to a servicemember or
military spouse who, by virtue of their service, does not reside in the
originating state.
