After a stellar group of military spouses started Blue Star Families, they embarked on a mission to support, connect, and empower military families. One of the myriad ways they have accomplished this is by hiring military spouses that work virtually from every corner of the nation, and Germany!

Blue Star Families is accepting applications for a Development Manager: (posted on 8/30/12)

The Development Manager manages the fundraising activities of the organization, working closely with the Managing Director and Development Director and programming staff. The position can be based anywhere in the United States with a strong preference for San Diego, CA or Washington DC. The position is newly created and allows for flexible schedules and ability to work from home (30 – 40 hours per week). There are no benefits at this time. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities: Support Fundraising Activities:
• Lead donor stewardship, donor database, prospect management and launch direct mail programs.
• Act as liaison with vendors and internal resources for all development activities including online giving.
• Prepare and produce lists for direct marketing efforts.
• Maintain donor files and manage list for special projects, campaigns and events.
• Support other functions as needed to support fundraising objectives.
Donor, Research, Communications, and Stewardship
• Draft and edit letters of acknowledgement, updates, proposals, reports, and other documents.
• Develop and update prospect research reports and any funding profiles.
• Participate in the development of fundraising strategies and donor stewardship plans.
• Maintain contact database and mailing lists: coordinate stewardship email blasts and mailings.
• Draft and edit letters of inquiry, grant applications and/or proposals.
Skills and Abilities:
• Dynamic professional with 3-5 years’ experience in development/fundraising arena.
• Experience working with donors in terms of prospecting, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding.
• Experience writing grants.
• Experience working with donor development/management software. Ability to evaluate software systems and make recommendation to adopt a suitable system for the organization.
• Experience and/or comfortable working in a “virtual environment.”
• Self-motivate with strong attention to detail.
• Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Books on Bases Program Manager:
The Books on Bases (BOB) Program Manager is a 20-hour a week key member of the BSF Program team. S/he is responsible for the planning, implementation and execution of the programs goals at both the chapter and national level. The BOB Program Manager supports the Program team’s annual program plan while working to support and empower BSF Chapter Directors and members at the local level.
Essential Duties Include:
• Responsible for all daily operations of the program.
• Adhere to the annual program calendar (PCM) and ensure program goals are met by coordinating the program implementation.
• Promote program participation in the community; interface with military impacted schools, CDC and base libraries.
• Manage and recruit new partners and publishers to expand the reach of the program
• Expand the program through creative ideas, collaboration with national staff and creation of tools, resources and lesson plans.
• Responsible for updating and modifying all program materials including training, standard operating procedures, marketing and tools.
• Work closely with the Deputy Directors Membership to achieve goals of the program, to increase participation in the program, increase BSF membership and to coordinate events across the country
• Work with the Communications team to help develop PR and marketing materials for the program; help develop media publicity for the program
• Ability to manage multiple projects
• Perform other tasks as mutually agreed
Required:
• Dynamic leader with excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
• Passion for making a difference in the military family community
• Ability to work and succeed independently in a geographically dispersed, “virtual” organization
• Familiarity with military culture, lifestyle, organizational structure and terminology
• Extensive experience with advance features of Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office suite
• 4 Year Degree – education requirements can be substituted by relevant volunteer/work experience and partial undergraduate study.
Desired:
• Experience in early education and/or managing a literacy program.
• Experience in Program Management and Development a plus.
• Experience in public relations, including drafting press releases and contacting media outlets.
• Proficient in using Social Marketing tools like Blogs, Facebook and Twitter.
• Experience CS4 or CS5 a plus.
• MLIS and/or Early Childhood Education Teaching Credentials - preferred

Americorps/Vista Position:
Blue Star Families seek an AmeriCorps VISTA member for a volunteer position. This position is being made available to BSF through the American Legion Auxiliary Call to Service Corps. Our mission is to support, empower and connect military families to each other, to their communities and to decision makers.
