Foreign Language Positions


Spanish and French Teachers for Afterschool Program

Overview:

St. Charles School is seeking experienced and dynamic Spanish and French teachers to teach in its new afterschool modern language program.  Candidates must be fluent in Spanish or French and have experience teaching elementary school-age children.

Knowledge of songs, story-telling, games, and cultural/faith activities, as well as guiding exercises in conversation are fundamental for this position. The successful candidate will be a “self-starter,” having good rapport with students, excellent communication skills, experience with multi-age classrooms, and an enthusiasm for language and culture.  In addition, St. Charles is seeking individuals who are willing to collaborate with fellow afterschool language teachers, as well as with current St. Charles language teachers, to develop continuity among the extracurricular elementary school classes and the middle school co-curricular classes.

Job Details:

These three to four positions are part of a new afterschool initiative to bring world languages to elementary school students.  Instructors may expect to teach mixed-grade classes either Monday-Wednesday from 3.15pm-3.45pm or Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3.15pm-3.45 pm.  Teaching responsibilities include grades K-2 and/ or grades 3-5.  Teachers will be responsible for developing a fun, immersion-style, and age-appropriate curriculum.  Hired applicants must be VIRTUS-trained or in process of acquiring training.  (VIRTUS is the Archdiocesan program for the prevention of child sexual misconduct.) Compensation is competitive.  Teachers report to the principal, Mr. Mayer.

Desirable Qualities:

Catholic
Native or near-native pronunciation
Prior teaching experience to elementary grades
Creative and engaging personality
Ability to implement immersion-style teaching and learning
Ability to engage students by using stories, songs and games in teaching
Program development experience
Bachelor’s Degree

Start Date: February 2013.  Classes will run for 12 weeks.
