When you are looking for employment, you are selling a product — yourself.
by
Looking for a job is a full-time business. Like business, you need to understand your product, your potential clients and have a strategy to get those clients to buy. So remember the story of “the man and his mule.”
A very poor farmer was forced to sell his five mules for $20 each. An entrepreneurial young man took out a loan and bought all the mules for $100. He then put a sign, “Pack animals – $100 each” outside his barn. He sold all five of them within the week.
The poor farmer, clearly upset that he hadn’t earned the same profits, asked, “How did you sell those mules for $100 each? They weren’t worth more than the $20 I sold them to you for.”
The young man looked the farmer squarely in the eye and told him, “I don’t sell mules. I sell pack animals.”
The young man understood his clients. He knew what they wanted and developed a plan how to sell it to them. He rebranded the mules into pack animals, which was the key phrase his clients would respond to.
The same branding is true for you as a military job seeker. As you sell yourself to corporate America, you have to rebrand your “military experience” not only into terms the hiring manager understands but into the terms that address what hiring managers need.
Effective advertising delivers a promise: shinier floors, more supple hair, or a better car. If that message fails to connect the value of the product to the needs of the consumer, then the product doesn’t sell. When you write a résumé, you are your own product. You need to demonstrate to hiring managers that you have what they want: relatable, transferable, and intangible skills that will add value to the company.
Look at every aspect of your résumé and make sure that all of it sells what is best about you. Ensure that your résumé has civilianized wording. Be positive that your move valuable skills are followed up by tangible results. Don’t let valuable military experience get lost in military translation.
Health Net tops Most Military Spouse Friendly Employers list May 7, 2008
Ranked number one out of nearly 2,500 companies
Health Net tops the list of America's Most Military Spouse Friendly Employers, according to the June 2008 issue of Military Spouse magazine.
The second annual list is a "who's who" of large corporations that have made the greatest effort and have had the greatest success in hiring the spouses of military troops. Health Net ranked number one out of nearly 2,500 companies, each with an annual revenue exceeding $1 billion, considered for the honor.
"The selection was based on company policies for spouses who are married to a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, including Guard and Reserve, as well as hiring policies and practices with respect to military spouses," says Sheila Riordan, manager, Staffing Consulting, Health Net, Inc.
"Many of these spouses learn about Health Net through the health services provided them through our HNFS TRICARE North contract," notes James Emanuel, manager, Staffing Consulting, Health Net, Inc. "What better potential associates than those who already are familiar with our services?"
"Companies have historically underutilized a talent pool of 1.1 million military spouses, largely because they have been viewed as a group that relocates often," says Babette Maxwell, co-founder and executive editor of Military Spouse. "But technology now enables employees to work remotely, reducing or eliminating the obstacles historically associated with frequent relocation."
Military Spouse general manager Rich McCormack adds, "Military spouses, 93 percent of whom are women, are educated, incredibly loyal and very hard-working. They are patriots who give 110 percent to companies that hire them."
Health Net also supports as well as recruits military spouses, having established a scholarship fund administered through National Military Family Association (NMFA) for deserving TRICARE North spouses who apply.
The scholarship reflects Health Net's desire to continue to find meaningful ways to serve and support military families.
"Veterans, retired service members and spouses of active duty service members make up an important part of Health Net," says Riordan.
Operation REMAX
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Operation RE/MAX is an employment recruitment program, targeting military spouses, retirees, injured veterans and other ex-military personnel. Volunteer RE/MAX brokers agree to attend on-base job fairs, sponsor informative "recruiting events," provide personal mentoring and schedule training as needed. All of these activities are provided at no cost to military participants. The RE/MAX broker also provides information on possible employment in the real estate industry, to assist program participants in deciding upon a career path.
If interested in pursuing a real estate license, the broker can also provide detailed information on local licensing requirements. In many cases, classroom instruction for obtaining a real estate license can be paid for by GI Bill benefits or with new CAA funds.

Spring Job Fever--Clean Up with These 10 Fresh Careers
by Joe Taylor Jr.
Spring Fever--a disease whose symptoms include restlessness, longing, and the desire for liberation. Generally preceded by Cabin Fever. Frequently followed by a vacation and a tan. But why fritter away all that seasonal energy when you can channel it into dusting off your career goals? Honor the time, and you just might find the cure for your spring fever when you clean up in a brand new career.
Spring--Time to Enter the Professions
Medicine and Law aren't lofty career paths exclusive to a handful of hardy intellectuals. If you yearn to work in as a medical or legal professional, let your seasonal energy draw you down one of these career paths:
Cardiovascular Technologist
Specialists who can use cutting edge tools to help doctors fight heart and blood vessel ailments are in high demand. Completing the medical technology training required for this important role gives specialists the freedom to set their own schedules and to work for more than one health care provider. Medical assisting schools can help nurses and other health professionals qualify for jobs that can pay $42,000 or more per year.
Home Health Nurse
To help serve aging Americans who still live in their own homes, medical assisting schools now emphasize courses for home health nurses. Whether self-employed or agency-affiliated, home health nurses often enjoy flexible schedules that can accommodate family commitments. With hard work and client recommendations, successful home health nurses can earn part time incomes of $20,000 or more each year.
High-Tech Lawyer / Paralegal
Because a law degree alone no longer guarantees a prime partnership, many independent attorneys use cutting edge tools to market their practices and to conduct business. Courses from paralegal schools online help professionals without law degrees develop similar niches. Working remotely from home for multiple law office clients can net $43,000 or more per year for independent paralegals.
Spring--Time to Get Down to Business
Dress your restlessness up in a pin-striped suit, if your dreams have that Wall Street edge. With a will to help people make money and some spring career training, you can head for one of these hot business careers:
Small Business Financial Advisor
Trusted advisors help small companies manage debt, identify investments, and maximize profit. Most successful advisors earn an MBA in finance before taking on clients. Fortunately, completing a degree in finance online makes preparing for this new career easier. Many advisors who run their own practices earn over $66,000 each year.
Management Consultant
Because not every manager can complete a business degree program, management consultants have become essential to corporate success. Consultants, coaches, and advisors often offer tough love to challenged executives. Many online MBA degree programs now offer courses in consulting that help prepare students for a career that can pay over $46,000 per year.
Executive Business Assistant
Today's top business assistants offer hourly support to the highest bidders. Virtual assistants work from home, often applying skills from a degree in business administration to clients ranging from solo entrepreneurs to software startups. Earning a business degree online offers a solid start to this tech-oriented job that often pays more than $37,000 per year.
Spring--Time to Get with the Program(ming)
Networking / IT Specialist
For a professional with a degree in information technology, life in an office building or a data center no longer has to be the norm. Mobile networking advisors earn $60,000 or more per year to connect clients' homes and offices to the Internet. By earning an IT degree online, a networking hobbyist can gain the certifications necessary to launch a solo practice as a local networking expert.
Mobile Applications Developer
Developers who know how to think small can build big bank accounts. A software programming degree can sharpen talents and speed up the process of releasing popular, certified applications. Some mobile applications developers earn $65,000 or more per year writing code for clients or earning royalties on their own projects.
Spring--Time to Have Fun!
If your springtime itch is to quit the same old grind, then you're ready for the rebirth of your fun side. Who told you work couldn't be play? Whether you're an extrovert headed for the social swim or an introvert who prefers a virtual playground, here are two careers where fun pays off:
Hospitality Coordinator
Freelance event coordinators, wedding planners, and party throwers help everyone from couples to companies enjoy special occasions. Hospitality management training programs focus on real world challenges that build experience and confidence. Successful hospitality coordinators can earn $45,000 or more in fees and salaries each year.
Video Game Designer
Around the world, video game revenues have eclipsed the earnings from traditional entertainment media. Graduates of graphic design schools work closely with technicians and programmers on today's most popular form of entertainment. Specialized video game design college degree programs can build the skills necessary to earn $42,000 or more per year as a professional game developer.
Spring Fever Payoffs
Each of these top ten professions requires hard work and a dedication to ongoing career training. However, a blend of education, passion, and raw talent can help newcomers to each of these fields establish themselves in a short amount of time. Many of these careers allow new professionals to start part-time, making it even easier to transition from an existing employer into a stable, exciting career.
There is an opening for two E-4's at Camp Atterbury for ADSW starting ASAP

ACAP 'Express' to Debut This Month (FEBRUARY 2008)
Army News Service Kayla Overton February 15, 2008 WASHINGTON - The launch of the Army Career Alumni Program Express, Feb. 28, will give Soldiers, their Families and Civilians a jump start on new careers as they retire or separate from the Army.
For example, the new online program will allow Soldiers, who are on deployment or living in remote locations, to begin planning for their future careers earlier than normal. Before ACAP Express, Soldiers had to come to an ACAP Center to receive services they will now be able to obtain online.
The new program will be as simple to use as scheduling an airline reservation online, according to James Hoffman, ACAP director.
Any Soldier on active duty, having at least 180 days of continuous active service, and separating within one year or retiring within two years, is eligible for the services.
Once approved and enrolled in the program, the planning begins. ACAP Express will allow a person to schedule attendance at events, access job assistance training tutorials, access an automated resume and cover-letter writer, and access ACAP counselors. Tutorials on job-search topics will also be available.
"Around 63,000 Soldiers come through the ACAP program annually," Hoffman said. "Soldiers are interested; they want to be successful, and our program will help them do that."
ACAP meets congressional mandates by offering pre-separation counseling and employment-assistance training.
ACAP Express allows Soldiers the ability to register and schedule services, but Hoffman reminded that ACAP centers at installations are still available. Soldiers deployed in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan can also receive support from ACAP Centers via phone and e-mail, Hoffman said.
Family members and Army Civilians are also encouraged to use ACAP Express. Once a Soldier retires or separates from the military, spouses sometimes find they have put their own careers on hold, and this is their opportunity to gain knowledge on how to enter the workforce, Hoffman said.
The ACAP Express program will undergo a 12-month pilot test to determine how to best meet the expectations of Soldiers, Hoffman said. He explained that users will critique the program and feedback will be reviewed in order to make the system even better and more functional.
GI Bill Apprenticeship and OJT Program
The following will guide you on the use of the GI Bill On-the-Job Training and Apprenticeship Program and explain the new FY 2008 payment rates - effective 1 October 2007.
If you are a veteran or currently in the guard or reserve, the On-The-Job Training (OJT) Program offers you an alternative way to use your VA (GI Bill) education and training benefits.
The following is a summary of these GI Bill alternatives.
When you are trained for a new job, you can receive monthly training benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in addition to your regular salary. This means that you can receive up to $935.85 a month ($262.65 for Reserve/Guard) tax-free, on top of your regular salary! That's over $14,000 in cash benefits over two years, for training in an OJT or apprenticeship training program.
VA pays veteran GI Bill participants on a scale depending on the amount of time they are enrolled in the program. For example from October 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007 the program pays $935.85 a month for the first six months of training, $715.65 for the second six months of training and $495.45 for remaining training.
Important OJT Payment Rate News: Due to the expiration of the law that increased the OJT payment to 85 percent of the GI Bill payment rate in 2005, the OJT payment rate will drop to 75 percent on January 1, 2008. This will mean that the current OJT (Veteran) payment rates will drop to $825.75, $605.55, and $385.35 in 2008.
VA pays GI Bill Selected Reserve participants on a similar scale but at the following reduced rates; $269.45 a month for the first six months of training, $206.05 for the second six months of training and $142.65 for remaining training. Selected Reserve participants will also see these rates drop in 2008.
